Simple Ripostes -- to the upper target
        a. Rarely is this a simple straight thrust, because the riposte generally meets the opponent's blade and the action finishes as a glide.thrust (Fig. 64, above)

        b. With a coupé (cutover) -- not illustrated
        c. With an angular thrust to the base of the neck (Fig. 65, above) [Editor's Note:Many contemporary fencers use the flick ("thrown thrust") rather than the pronated position illustrated.]

Simple Ripostes -- to the lower target
        a. Straight thrust with flèche (Fig. 66, above) 
        b. Angular thrust with lunge to the low inside (Fig. 67, below)
